Virtual memory is a component of most operating systems, such as MAC OS, Windows and Linux. Virtual memory has a very important role in the operating system. It allows us to run more applications on the system than we have enough physical memory to support. Virtual memory is simulated memory that is written to a file on the hard drive. That file is often called page file or swap file. It’s used by operating systems to simulate physical RAM by using hard disk space. To understand how virtual memory works we have to go back in time, before virtual memory even exited. In the days of Windows version 1 or 2, we actually couldn’t run many applications if we didn’t have enough physical RAM installed. As we know, the system itself is using a portion of RAM. If we run more applications, each application will also get its own portion of RAM. If we run too many applications, at one point we will run out of RAM. At that point we won’t be able to open any additional application. Back in those days we had to live with that. If we don’t have enough memory, we can’t run applications.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops,and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba,Lenovo, and Samsung).

  3. When i had maybe 4 or 5 programs open at once
    (other than razer synapse and other background programs ofc)
    my computer would freeze and task manager showed that my cpu was at 83%and locked there. Trying to close a program or navigate it lead to the program not responding leading me to try to turn of my PC. This really helped because you also teached me how to convert ram size into mb and all of that stuff that i have no idea what it means.

  4. First, the paging file is not virtual memory. Second, you’re almost always better off letting windows manage it.

  5. if you have 16 gb ram you only need like 2 gb page file 32 gb around 1 gb size i have 16 gb ram snd set mine to 2 gb also diable hybernation sys it uses 3 to 4 gb of hd space .

  6. I did the math an mine was 24GB for 16GBs of Ram so i locked it at max 25GB Virtual Ram so should be Solid

  7. For 8 Gb Ram

    1024 x 8gb = 8,192 x 1.5 = 12,288

    so Initial size = 12,288

    Maximum size = 12,288 x 3 = 36,864

  8. I have 12 GB of RAM, but upon inputting the recommended into the minimum and 18432 into the maximum, after restarting, my "Virtual memory" have reduced from (I believe) 4+ GB to just 2.61 GB? Am I doing good?
